Hidden Beauty of Grief: Growing Through Loss

  • Hidden Lake Retreat Eagle Creek, OR, 97022 United States (map)

Grief and loss are part of our human experience. Whether you are someone who has rituals and processes for coping with losses as they occur or put them aside to “deal with later,” circumstances in life may be stirring a need to spend time reflecting on a loss or losses. Being in a gathering with others also on the journey can be affirming, supportive and help you connect with this common thread that stitches us together through life, whether or not the losses are the similar. There is strength and beauty in gathering in a circle and being present for one another.

This weekend retreat is designed to allow participants to reflect on their losses as deeply as they feel ready, be that a toe in the water or diving in headfirst. The retreat will include an opening and closing group ritual, writing prompts and other creative activities, time for personal reflection and room to “just be.” Anne's 22’ Chartres canvas labyrinth (http://nurtureyourjourney.net/labyrinth-facilitator/) will be included in some actives and be available for walking throughout the weekend. Self-care and time to do what feels appropriate for YOU will be affirmed.

It is not unusual to enter into a retreat experience with an idea or expectation of reflecting on one area in your life and find you are led in another direction. When exploring grief and loss unexpected emotions can arise and you may find yourself needing to step away from the group for a while. Taking time to care of your own needs will be respected. Anne will also be available during open times to offer one-on-one support.

The retreat will be held at Hidden Lake Retreat (http://hiddenlakeretreat.com/) nestled in Eagle Creek, Oregon, a 50 minute drive east from downtown Portland. Vibrant wild life (such as beaver, river otter, salmon, deer, coyote, bobcat and over 40 species of birds), a host of cedars and other native trees, a holly orchard and seventy-five-year-old rhododendrons grace this special land. The owners and hosts, Judith and Lauri, prepare amazing on-site meals with fresh, local and organic ingredients whenever possible. The accommodations encourage rest and time away from the busyness of life and the comfort needed to do grief work.

Fallen
Drifting aimlessly
on a sea of grief and pain,
the leaf cradles a teardrop.
Offers refuge.
Embodies hope.
Just as winter awakens to spring,
our deepest sorrow harbors the seed
of hope renewed.
Hope renewed.
— Susan Ring

(In my sleep I dreamed this poem)

Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.

It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift.
